Welcome To Broken Glen Ranch

Come On In!!

Broken Glen Ranch was founded in the summer of 1996. We purchased 40 acres in beautiful Washington County, Wisconsin and named the place after Glen (who was now "broke"). In the spring of 1997, we got our first grade goats from a local farm for a 4-H project that was "smaller than a dairy cow", and the madness began.

Our oldest son Jesse helped build stalls, and twins Karl and Kevin joined 4-H goat project. Kevin showed his grade Saanen doe, Angel, at our county fair which consisted of competition between Angel, two pygmy goats, and two grade bucks complete with horns. Our daughter Jill was too young for 4-H, but was thrilled when the dairy cow judge invited her to participate with our LaMancha wether, Patches, to round out the showmanship class. From this point on our "project" has grown into registered American Saanens, who we love for their gentleness and milk production, and Nigerian Dwarves, without whose cuteness spring kidding time would not be complete. So, we have both the largest and smallest of dairy breeds and love to see the contrast in sizes as they grow side by side.

County Fair Fun

We have sought to build our herd on sound milking as well as showing bloodlines. We now milk twice a day with a portable machine. We pull kids from their dams at birth and feed only artificial colostrum and pasteurized milk. Our herd tested negative for CAEV and Johnnes’ last year, and we will test again this spring. We have never had an abscess. We practice herd health with annual CD & T and BOSE vaccines and regular worming and hoof trimming. We keep our numbers small so that all are well socialized and hand bottle fed. A balanced diet with added vitamins and free choice minerals and baking soda is offered along with good quality free choice hay. We had most of our girls appraised with HES scoring under Mr. Harvey Considine in fall of 2004 and are planning linear appraisal this summer.

Jill, Karl and Kevin with some of their Winnings

Jesse is now master of his own home and the twins interests have turned to cars and sports participation. Glen remains faithful supplier of funds and transportation/barn maintenance, and Jill and I have taken on the breeding/milking/showing aspect. Each year we have taken on a few more shows and gone a little further from home. This year will be our greatest endeavor with ADGA Nationals as our goal. We invite you to come join the ride with us this summer as we post our joys and failures. It is my goal to keep you updated on our site. Remember "Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!"
