Course Title and Description:
Manual Edema Mobilization for sub-acute upper extremity edema reduction
Hand therapists are often frustrated with post acute edema that continues to return in spite of their best efforts. This edema presents as viscous, thick, and very slow to “rebound” from being pitted. Edema that is “Thick” and “Slow to Rebound” from being pitted indicates an over loaded, compromised, congested lymphatic system. If the lymphatic system is specifically and proximally activated, “persistent edema” quickly and permanently reduces. This Manual Edema Mobilization course enables participants to be successful in reducing sub acute and chronic edema not only because they learn and have extensive practice time using the MEM manual techniques, but also because of the strong background information provided on the anatomy of the lymphatic and venous systems. Combining this vascular anatomical knowledge, information on deciphering types of edema, extensive practice of the MEM manual techniques-including Pump Points, compression techniques, and establishing the very critical patient self management treatment programs, participants are enabled to use critical thinking skills and integrate MEM with other treatment modalities in time limited treatment schedules. Because of the extensive lab. time and case study presentation, participants feel confident to immediately apply techniques in a clinical setting. MEM addresses over-whelmed intact “normal” nodes and lymphatics as found with sub-acute post trauma/surgery “persistent” edema and sub-acute and chronic post stroke hand edema. The technique is not appropriate for post cancer lymphedema or primary lymphedema.
NEW TO THE 2006 – 07 MEM COURSES:
Technique length has been shortened and sequencing slightly change based on input of from therapists who have been getting excellent outcomes in the last 10 years and keeping within customary treatment schedule lengths.
More emphasis on how to modify MEM treatment programs to meet specific diagnostic needs
New MEM techniques included to reduce sub acute shoulder edema
More emphasis on recognizing and treating proximal “non visible” edema
Treatment techniques coordinate with two current research studies in process (USA and Denmark)
More emphasis on appropriate integration of adjunctive therapy methods such as edema reduction taping
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
discuss the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system
describe the rationale and how to specifically mobilize the lymphatic system for edema reduction
list the various types and stages of edema and describe ways to treat them
practice Manual Edema Mobilization and compression techniques for orthopedic, sub-acute post surgical hand/arm edema and stroke hand/arm edema management
describe problem-solving techniques in relation to complications of edema management (wound healing stages, infections, etc.)
describe edema evaluation and documentation methods
become proficient in application of MEM “Pump Point” stimulation
feel competent in choosing and applying both the short and long version of MEM

Course Title and Description:
Manual Edema Mobilization for the Lower Extremity
A two day course which teaches lymphatic drainage techniques (MEM style) applicable to sub acute L.E. sports injuries, post surgical hips and kness, L.E. trauma conditions, venous insufficiency induced lymphedema, and wounds.
Course Description: A 13 hour didactic and lab course teaching therapists to recognize and decongest lymphatic system overloaded caused edema. the The “persistent edema” presents as being “slow to rebound” from being pitted, and doesn’t or minimally reduces with elevation over night. This is the sub-acute edema seen with L.E. sports injuries, wounds, post surgical hips and knees, trauma, and lower extremity venous insufficiency edema that has reached a state of lymphatic overload. Once the lymphatic system is decongested and tissue waste products, etc. are removed from the area by the lymphatics; pain and swelling immediately reduce, wounds heal much faster and re-current cellulitis is significantly diminished. The course teaches how to recognize the early stages of lymphatic overloaded edema and quickly reduce it. Unique to the course is the utilization of “Pump Point Stimulation” which quickly reduces this edema.
Typical Comments from Past Participants:
“I had two patients with venous leg wounds and hard indurated tissue of the lower leg that hadn't healed in nine months. After 7 Tx. sessions using the MEM techniques the wounds were closed and healed. There has been no further incidents in six months with either patient.” PA from Milwaukee
see case study from a physical therapist at: cedarcommunity.org/outreach/professionaleducation
Learning Objectives: As a result of this course the participant will be able to:
Describe the lymphatic system and its relationship to the development of lymphostatic (exudate) edema
Discuss the five principles of how to clinically activate the lymphatic system based on available research
Determine the clinical signs that early venous insufficiency edema has become a lymphatic overloaded (exudate) edema
Competently perform the 3 basic massage techniques of MEM for the lower extremities
Appropriately integrate traditional methods of edema Tx. into an MEM program
Demonstrate ability to perform 3 lower extremity low-stretch bandaging techniques and their appropriate application in the MEM program
Write out a home self edema management program for a patient
Know the principles of skin care, garments and when to utilize pneumatic pumps as related to transudate or exudate edema
Competent in performing and applying appropriately eight “Pump Point Stimulation” techniques

Course Title and Description:
Edema Blitz: for the upper and/or the lower extremities
Presenter: Sandy Artzberger MS OTR CHT CLT
Course Description: For the past seven years Rosemary and Sandy have been achieving amazing and permanent edema reduction for sub-acute edema, chronic edema, and wound edema in both the upper and lower extremities by combining Myofascial Release (MFR), Kinesio Taping®, gentle scar mobilization, and Manual Edema Mobilization (MEM) techniques. All three of these techniques specifically activate the lymphatic system in slightly different ways. Knowing how to combine these techniques for a specific pathology is one of the secrets to successful reduction. The other secrets to successful edema reduction include understanding specifically how to activate the lymphatic system and what types of edema respond to these techniques. This 15-hour course will share these three secrets of edema reduction in both a didactic and lab format. Participants will feel confident in using these techniques upon returning to their clinic. An extensive manual with detailed procedure photos will be provided for each participant.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
1. describe
the lymphatic system’s anatomical structures and how to
activate them for edema reduction.
2. discuss the various types of edema and specifically why MFR, MEM and Kinesio Tape® will or will not activate them.
3. list foundational concepts, applications and contraindications for each of the three techniques.
4. appropriately apply techniques learned to the clinical situation.
5. use material learned for related critical problem-solving.
Sandy Artzberger MS OTR CHT CLT will also do MEM for the L.E. or Edema Blitz (for either upper or lower extremity sub acute edema) off campus for other facilities as requested.
