BOB BORKOWSKI/staff photographer CHECK THIS OUT — Pewaukee’s Alicia Czech (left) dribbles the ball Monday at Pewaukee High School under pressure from Kettle Moraine’s Michelle Tollakson. Kettle Moraine won the nonconference varsity soccer match, 2-1.
Sophomore halfback Lauren Straehler's goal in the 63rd minute was the difference Monday at Pewaukee High School.
Visiting Kettle Moraine defeated the host Pirates, 2-1, in a varsity girls soccer match. It was the first match of the season for the Lasers. Pewaukee, which lost a week ago to Arrowhead in its opener, fell to 0-2 on the young season.

"I thought we were a little flat-footed in the back on that goal by Straehler," said Randy Staus, Pewaukee's varsity girls soccer coach.

Pewaukee tied the game, 1-1, when senior striker Kara Mirsberger scored in the 28th minute. Her unassisted goal matched the Lasers, who took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a goal from freshman Christina Nordstrom.

"I was happy to see Nordstrom, a freshman, come off the bench and immediately contribute," said Greg Prospero, Kettle Moraine's head girls soccer coach.

"Overall, this was a good start for our team," said Prospero.

Indirectly, Prospero said, senior defender Tori Stormo triggered both of Kettle Moraine's goals.

"She played extremely well on Monday," said Prospero. "We tried to reverse the ball, and Tori was a big part of that process."

Staus said his team's best chance to tie the game came on a header from senior Kathryn Koerten.

The Pirates' goalie on Monday was junior Gina Slesar. Her counterpart was junior Alyssa Armbrust.

Pewaukee played Racine Case on Wednesday at Pewaukee High School. The Lasers played Wauwatosa West at Kettle Moraine on Wednesday.

Both teams are in tournaments over the weekend. Pewaukee plays at the Arrowhead Warhawk Quad. At 7 p.m. Friday, the Pirates play Oconomowoc. At 10 a.m. Saturday, Pewaukee faces Madison Edgewood.

Kettle Moraine hosts its Laser Tournament on Friday and Saturday. At 4 p.m. Friday, the Lasers play Menomonee Falls. The eight-team tournament continues at 9:15 a.m. Saturday. The championship game of the tournament is scheduled for noon Saturday.

"Kettle Moraine's got a nice team and the kind of team we'll be playing in the Woodland Conference and in the playoffs," said Staus.

"Games like this let us know where we're at, and what we've got to work on," Staus added.

Arrowhead and Pewaukee got started on Tuesday.

Jeff Staus, Arrowhead's varsity girls soccer coach, said the season-opening match with Pewaukee was played in the midfield on Tuesday.

The Arrowhead Warhawks, mentioned in the preseason Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll, defeated Pewaukee at Arrowhead in a non conference match, 1-0.
Arrowhead's Lauren Jansen, a midfielder, scored the first goal of the season for the Warhawks in the 12th minute. Ashley Grandlich had the assist. Both involved are juniors.

"It was good to get outside and play a game," said Randy Staus, the Pewaukee varsity girls soccer coach.

"We haven't been able to get outside much, so the elements and competition were good for us," said Staus.

Jeff Staus said his club got solid debuts from juniors Kaylee Cardinal and Sally Colby.

Randy Staus said Kathryn Koerten and Charlotte Larkin were Pewaukee's leaders.

"Honestly, the game was played in the midfield," said Jeff Staus.

"There weren't many opportunities for either team," he said.

Arrowhead edged Pewaukee 4-1 in shots on goal.

The Warhawks host their annual Spring Thaw on Thursday and Friday. Arrowhead hosts Muskego at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A win would put the Warhawks in the championship game against either Milwaukee Divine Savior or Homestead at 6:30 p.m. March 23.

The Pirates will host Kettle Moraine at 6:30 p.m. March 26.
